PROCESSING FACILITY

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

More Albertans want to buy local beef to support farmers and ranchers in Alberta. Many small producers have developed a market for their beef but struggle to secure an abattoir to have their beef processed.

Creekstone is proposing to build a modern abattoir to create opportunity for small beef producers to process and sell their products right here in Alberta. Our goal is to build a small plant with a processing capacity of 100 head per day.  In comparison, the two larger plants in Alberta process approximately 4,000-4,500 per day.

Creekstone has received approval for the facility under the Alberta Environmental Protections and Enhancement Act.  This Act provides the context on how the abattoir’s operations will be monitored to assure responsible environmental stewardship. Also, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency would be monitoring the daily activities of the plant and enforce any deficiencies in operations.

The plant will be built adjacent to Cattleland Feedyards Ltd. site on the SE quarter of 28-25-25 W4.  Because of this proximity, cattle supply would be close and available, if needed, and it would reduce the travel related stress and cost to local feeders and ranchers. Also, with the support of neighboring producers, there are several possibilities including creating and promoting a local brand that would expand the markets available to our nearby ranchers.
